All of us make choices every day. Some of them concsciously and some of them unconsciously. The choices we make have a big impact on our overall happiness. As I wrote in my former articles: „Happiness is a decision.“ I highly suggest that when you make a choice to be aware of its consequences. We have the power to choose what we want to do with our lives. And that power is one of the greatest gifts we possess.
The first choice you make every day is when you get out of bed. That might sound simple but it is a very important one. Because when you decide to get out of bed a little bit earlier you actually have more time for yourself. Especially the first hour of the day is essential for the outcome of your day. When I used to work in a regular 9-5 job I always got out of bed late and rushed to work. I was mainly grumpy because I did not make the choice to get up a bit earlier and take some time for myself. In hindsight a different choice would have definitely benefitted my happiness at that time. So just a simple choice – when you decide to wake up – can already change your day completely.
Another example for a daily choice is the food we decide to eat. Some people do not even consciously think about their choice of nutrition. It is a very important one though. If you start your day off with a well prepared nutrious meal with fruits, whole grains etc. it is a lot better than just throwing something down your throat that you catch on your way to work e.g. a „crappy“ bagel. Again with a bit reflection on this choice you can be happier and benefit from your choice. Your body will thank you as well 😉
How do you go to work? Ever thought about that choice? If it is not too far, have you ever considered taking a bicycle? You are going to kill a lot of birds with one stone if you do this. It does benefit your health because you are exercising. You will spend time outside and breathe fresh air instead of sitting in a crowded bus or metro. And you will also do our mother nature a great favor because you will not pollute the air. And your mood is better because you have been active already and most people sit too much around in their jobs anyways.
So now I have given you some small examples where your daily choices can already benefit your happiness. But there are also choices in life that effect ourselves quite dramatically. A big choice for every young person is what to do with their lives. I think society and other people often tell us what to do. Finish high school, get a degree and then get a good job. But do we ever question this path? Rarely I would say. Because even nowadays we run from one institution to another just to function. But what about your passions? What about the things you really like? Ever thought about building a lifestyle around the things you love?
Who says that you have to do what you have been told to? You can make the choice to live the life that you want. That is a huge privilege and we should be grateful for that. There are many people, who do not have that choice. So take advantage of it!
A lot of times big choices mean big changes. And that scares us! It is common that when it comes to a big change that fear and anxiety take over. When I decided to go on a different job path than most people I got really scared and started questioning everything I was doing. In hindsight this time was important but I am so glad that I did not let fears dictate my decision making. Of course you will feel scared and insecure when you are about to make a big decision such as a job change or a break up with your partner. Think about the consequences this choice will bring to you. Think about the things that are going to be different. Think about why you want to make that choice and how it will affect you afterwards. And do not listen to doubts and opinions of others! PLEASE DO NOT!
Your choices in life matter. Your choices are the stepping stones in your path of life. Always remember every choice brings a consequence and most of them we have in our own hands. It is up to us what to do with our lives and to define our happiness. We cannot put someone else in charge. Make choices that benefit you and will leave you happier! Work on it everyday to make a good habit out of your decision making.
Yesterday I heard a quote from a guy that I found very inspiring: „Regret hurts more than failure.“ – shoutout to „stopbeingstagnant“ www.instagram.com/stopbeingstagnant
Even if we fail at something, it is not as bad as if we never tried it in the first place!
Do not hesitate when you are about to make a big decision in your life. Just do it ! 🙂
